Contemporary art gallery: your questions answered
Whether you are visiting a gallery for the first time or thinking about submitting your work for exhibition, the same questions come up again and again. Here are honest answers to the ones we hear most often at Hype Unique Gallery.
Questions about visiting the gallery
Most contemporary galleries, including Meridian, are open to the public during regular business hours with no appointment needed. You are welcome to walk in, look at the current exhibition, and leave without speaking to anyone — though most visitors find that a brief conversation with the gallery team adds something to the experience. Opening receptions are a particularly good time to visit: they are free, the artist is usually present, and the atmosphere is relaxed and social. If you prefer a quieter, more personal experience, a private viewing outside regular hours is often available by appointment.
Questions about buying artwork
Prices for works in a gallery exhibition are set by the artist in consultation with the gallery. At Meridian, all prices are listed transparently and there are no hidden buyer's fees. Payment plans and lay-away arrangements are available for larger purchases — ask the gallery team. If you buy a work, the gallery will handle secure packaging and can arrange professional shipping within Canada if you are not local. The consultation fee for our art consultation service is credited in full toward any purchase you make within 60 days, so there is no financial barrier to getting proper advice before you commit.
Questions about submitting work for exhibition
To be considered for a Meridian exhibition, send a portfolio of eight to twelve images alongside a short artist statement by email. We review submissions on a rolling basis and respond within three weeks. We prioritise artists living or working in the Central Okanagan, though we consider work from across BC when it fits our programme. If your work is selected, we will discuss the exhibition format — solo show, group exhibition, or pop-up showcase — and agree on a list of pieces, installation requirements, and the opening reception date. Our gallery retains 35% of any sales made during the show; artists receive 65% within 14 days of a confirmed sale.
Questions about framing and conservation
Framing consultations at Meridian are free and carry no obligation. Bring your artwork in during business hours and a member of our team will walk you through moulding, matboard, and glazing options and give you a written quote to take away. Standard turnaround is 10 business days; rush service in three business days is available for an additional charge. For works that have suffered damage — water, fading, surface grime, or minor tears — we offer an in-studio condition assessment and can handle straightforward restoration work in-house. For complex cases, we provide a written assessment and a referral to a specialist conservator.
Do I need an appointment to visit the gallery?
No appointment is needed during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday. Private showroom viewings and framing consultations are by appointment — we recommend booking ahead so a team member can give you their full attention.
Can I commission a custom artwork through the gallery?
Yes. We can connect you with artists in our network who accept commissions, facilitate the introduction, and advise on scope and pricing. The commission agreement is between you and the artist directly, and there is no referral fee.
Do you accept work on consignment?
Yes. We accept work on consignment for our rotating exhibitions. We do not purchase artwork outright. Consignment terms are discussed individually with each artist — contact us or submit a portfolio for consideration.
Are your premises accessible?
Yes. Our entrance is step-free from street level, the main gallery and framing studio are on a single level, and our washroom is accessible. If you have specific needs, let us know when you book and we will make sure everything is ready.
Do prices include tax?
All prices shown are before applicable taxes. GST and PST where applicable are added at the time of purchase, and we will always show you the full total before you confirm any transaction.
A contemporary art gallery is more approachable than it might seem from the outside. Ask questions, take your time, and remember that the people running a good gallery genuinely want you to find something you love — whether that is today or on your tenth visit.
Ready to bring something beautiful to your walls?
